Rich text editing trends for 2024: The future of content creation

by | Dec 15, 2023 | Public Relations

In today’s ever evolving landscape of digital content creation, the significance of rich text editing cannot be overstated. This year, the dynamics of content creation went through a transformative shift due to AI finally breaking into the mainstream, and as we stand on the threshold of 2024, it’s clear that the ripple effects of emerging trends will redefine the way we produce and engage with textual content.

From advanced collaboration features to the intersection of AI, the rich text editing landscape is gearing up for a revolution that not only enhances the efficiency of content creators but elevates the quality and interactivity of the content itself. As we look to 2024, here are four rich text editing trends we foresee:

The intersection of AI and rich text editing

AI has been improving certain rich text editor capabilities for years; however, the role of generative AI has demonstrably shaped the market and engineering expectations of what rich text editors need to offer in the very near future. Users now expect rapid advancements in their rich text editing products, including complete integration with generative Large Language Models and predictive AI options such as AI-driven spelling and grammar checks, intelligent formatting and heightened customization.

Optimization of the content experience through creation, editing, layout and production requires new capabilities for the overall WYSIWYG editing process for a  more productive and enhanced user experience.

Using AI for content creation isn’t new, but seamlessly integrating AI into the fabric of your rich text editor is. This approach goes above mere utilization and moves towards creating a symbiotic relationship between human creativity and technology.  By doing so, organizations will propel productivity and optimize content creation, shaping a heightened standard for the user experience in the digital realm while eliminating the need for various plugins that form single-functions.

The rise of voice-to-text and automation technology

In this ever-evolving landscape, the spotlight on AI shouldn’t overshadow other diverse growth opportunities within rich text editing. One example is voice-to-text technology, which is soaring in demand among long term end users. Combined with automation and collaboration capabilities, the convergence of  rich text editing and voice-to-text technology is anticipated to create substantial benefits, from enhanced efficiency to streamlined processes across globally scattered teams.

With this technology, users are able to articulate their thoughts and ideas verbally, in real time, allowing the text editor to transcribe and translate the spoken words into written form. This not only accelerates the content creation process, but caters to a broad range of individuals, including those who prefer hands-free ideation, multilingual teams or those with accessibility needs. As more rich text editors embrace these advancements, they address the evolving expectations of end-users while creating a more inclusive, efficient and collaborative future in content creation.

Rich text editing fundamentals are not going away

While technological advancements have increased  developers’ expectations of their rich text editor, going into 2024, prioritizing fundamentals will see a resurgence. Survey results from the annual State of Rich Text Editing Report show that 73 percent of developers cited performance as essential to the future of rich text editing. Closely following this was security, with 70 percent of respondents citing this as a priority.

Other factors include easy customization, user-friendly onboarding and a familiar UI. These findings point to a strong need to invest in the basics. Seemingly simple items like difficulty in manipulating media files, lack of integration with other tools and clean copy-paste functionality from external sources can result in significant end-user frustration. While leaders in the world of rich text editing must stay abreast of the latest trends and innovations, it’s imperative they don’t get distracted  by flashy, unique features without first prioritizing  general features that are essential to daily work.

Evolve or be replaced

In an age of AI-powered assistance in content creation, rich text editors are not going anywhere. They are seen as a critical component of platforms and applications, with approximately 50 percent of professionals managing, updating or developing their editor at least once a month. This frequent interaction underlines the need for a strong, customizable, collaborative and integrative option that will remain a core tenant of any organization’s tech stack. As users clamor for ease of use, seamless experiences and engaging formatting, a strong platform can make all the difference.

The rapid pace of change in web development and emerging technologies poses a significant threat to any rich text editor and utilizing legacy or inflexible editors is no longer an option. Every rich text editor must continually upgrade and invest in new features to answer fluctuating user demands and expectations, while still remaining true to essential fundamental features.

When choosing a rich text editor, look first for a focus on solid engineering and well-done basics, including customization, security, and responsiveness. This foundation allows top of the line rich text editors to then construct a more robust, versatile editor, capable of tracking and incorporating critical new features and emerging trends.
